Discover how technology has changed our lives over time and how interacting with Chat GPT offers new possibilities.
Do you remember the animated series "The Jetsons"? Who doesn't remember that cartoon produced by Hanna-Barbera, which portrayed a family living in an imaginary future where technology dominated people's daily lives? The series premiered in 1962 and showcased an incredible family composed of parents George and Jane, and their children Judy and Elroy, along with the clever dog Astro. They lived in a fully automated house, used flying cars, had robots as integral parts of their families (the robot Rosie, responsible for household tasks), and used phones that allowed video calls. It was fascinating to see all the technology of this 'family of the future'. What we didn't know at the time was that fiction was showing a reality we would witness...
Recalling the Technology of the 70s/80s: Black and White TVs, Cassette Tapes, and Vinyl Records
Around the 70s, most homes did not have color TVs, even though they were invented in the 1950s, because they were too expensive for most people. The images were in black and white, and we would imagine what colors the characters' eyes and hair would be.
And what about music? Who doesn't remember cassette tapes for playing music, which often got tangled inside their cases, and we would spend hours delicately trying to recover them to not lose our favorite songs that were recorded on them?
Then came cassette tapes, which allowed us to watch movies that were rented at video rental stores. There were reel-to-reel recorders, rotary dial phones where we had to dial each number once and wait for the dial to return to its original position.
Record players, every young person wanted to have one, with many vinyl records, which played music recorded on a rotating disc and a diamond needle, which, when placed on top of the disc, produced encoded information and generated mechanical vibrations that were amplified and reproduced through speakers.
And personal computers, which were only created in 1976 and marketed from the 80s, were true monstrosities with black and white screens, slow and with few resources, running simple programs.
The Evolution of Cell Phones: From the Brick with Antenna and the Revolutionary Smartphone to Chat GPT
When we reached the 90s, we were impressed with a phone that could accompany us anywhere. I remember businessmen and socialites who were displaying black bricks with antennas as a synonym of 'status'. The first cell phone, or 'telemóvel' as the Portuguese say, invented in 1973 by Motorola, weighed about 1 kg, and was only capable of making and receiving voice calls. But in 1992, IBM created the first smartphone, a significant milestone in technology, paving the way for the popularization of multifunctional cell phones from the 2000s. And then came the internet that connects people all over the world, allowing instant information sharing, a fundamental milestone in society's transformation and technological advancement.
All of this is still very present in the vintage memory of those who lived through those decades and are now faced with yet another technological popularization: Artificial Intelligence. Among all the AIs available to us, mere mortal consumers, Chat GPT came to surprise those who don't look favorably upon technology.
Chat GPT: Interaction with Artificial Intelligence for Everyone
Chat GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an artificial intelligence system that uses a language model to understand a simple command and generate text similarly to human beings. During its training, the computer was fed with large amounts of textual data, allowing it to learn complex patterns in various contexts, making the tool capable of generating texts similar to what a person would write.
The most interesting aspect of this technology is the possibility of interaction with humans, allowing a conversation with the machine as if it were talking to another real person. This enables asking questions and Chat GPT generating coherent answers, providing a conversational experience.
It is a technology that allows various interactions, from making a simple shopping list for a low-carb diet to complex tasks such as generating codes for information technology professionals.
There are several functions and benefits for the user when interacting with the technology, including quickly obtaining relevant information since the tool is available on the internet. From personal areas of human development to social interactions and business, anything that depends on textual elaboration can benefit from using Chat GPT.
Although Chat GPT is a magnificent aid in text production, it should not be considered a substitute for human writing and communication. Questions and commands should be objective and coherent, as answers can sometimes go out of context, and some may be misleading. Texts produced by Artificial Intelligence are based on linguistic patterns, which exclude human creativity and emotions. Therefore, caution is needed when using it.
As for the question everyone asks about whether artificial intelligence will replace humans?
In my humble opinion, that won't happen, as human relationships depend on many factors that, at least at the current moment, are not able to be incorporated into a machine. However, only time will tell where technology will lead us. Honestly, I wish I could live a thousand more years to find out.
