Today's story is about an American artist who was born in the 19th century and only achieved success after the age of 78. Her name is Anna Mary Robertson, also known as Grandma Moses.
A bit of Grandma Moses' story
Anna was born in 1860 and grew up on a working farm. She married young and had 10 children, only five of whom survived, and she devoted herself completely to her family and farm for many years.
Having lived many years dedicated to the family and the farm, it was only after the death of her husband that Anna finally found her passion for painting. The children had already moved into their lives and gone their own ways, leaving her in search of something to fulfill her.
Initially she dedicated herself to embroidering with thread for friends and family, but when, aged 76, she developed arthritis, her sister encouraged her to dedicate herself full time to painting.
Grandma Moses was self-taught and painted from her experiences in the field and in life. One day, a local art collector discovered his painting displayed in a market shop, bought all the works and soon they were exhibited at Galerie Saint-Etienne in New York. Her canvases depicting rural landscapes and everyday scenes captivated people, and she quickly gained prominence among art collectors.
At the age of 78, Grandma Moses had her first exhibition in New York and has become a beloved and popular artist in the United States. She lived to be 101 years old, leaving behind about 1500 paintings, many of which are on display at the Bennington Museum in Vermont, USA.

Her dedication to painting emerged after facing arthritis, which prevented her from continuing embroidery, and she left a legacy of approximately 1500 paintings.
Her journey of learning and discovery is an example of how, even under the social pressures of the time, it was possible to continue producing and learning.
